Ben Jonson

Ben Jonson (1572–1637) was an English playwright, poet, and literary critic, regarded as the second most important English dramatist after Shakespeare during the reign of James I. He was known for his satirical plays and masques, and was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree from Oxford University and a pension from the crown, often considered England's first poet laureate.
